錦小路通室町西入にあるので「錦天神山」または「火除天神山」ともいわれる。永正年間（1504～1520）京都に大火のあったとき、時ならぬ霰が降り猛火はたちまちに消えたが、そのとき一寸二分（約3.6センチ）の天神像が降ってきたのでこれを祀ったのがこの山の起こりであるという。山の上には欄縁にそって朱塗り極彩色の廻廊をめぐらし、中央に唐破風春日造の神殿を安置する。前懸は16世紀にベルギーで製作された「イーリアス」物語を描いた毛綴を用いているが（平成21年復元新調）、中国刺繍の太湖岩鳳凰図もある。左右の胴懸は上村松篁（昭和60年新調）、上村淳之（平成14年新調）親子の原画花鳥綴織で、後懸は「紅地雲龍宝尽図」（平成21年新調）が用いられている。山の縁起にちなみ宵山には「火防せ、雷除け」の御守が授与される。

It is said that in 1510, a great fire raged throughout Kyoto. Suddenly, however, hail (“arare” in Japanese) began to fall and put out the fire. Then, at the same time, a small statue of Tenjin, about 3.6 cm. in length, dropped from the sky. From that time onward, Tenjin became popular as a deity of fire protection and hail, as well as a God of education.
This float is meant to represent Tenmangu Shrine, and includes a statue of Tenjin in the middle of it. Since Tenmangu Shrines are especially noted for their plum blossoms in February, this float bears both pine boughs and plum blossoms.
